If the vote passes, the new agreement is signed by the university and a workers` representative and filed with the Fair Work Commission. As soon as this is submitted to the Commission, workers, trade unions and negotiators will receive a copy of the diversity of enterprise agreements. June 24, 2020: The Australian National University announced this morning that a very small majority of employees had voted in favour of the ANU`s proposal to amend its enterprise agreement. The amendment will delay two planned wage increases. Total 2,128 (50.46%) 2.089 (49,54 %) voted against. The NTEU opposed the proposal. Despite this narrow defeat, we are proud of our members` campaign on issues of justice, job protection and financial transparency. The proposed amendment responds to the effects of the COVID 19 pandemic on the financial health of the university and follows positive staff responses. The university will forward the amendment to the Fair Work Commission to ensure that the amendment to the enterprise agreement is formally approved.
During the access period, three briefings were held, during which staff were able to ask questions about the proposed amendment. Links to the images from the briefings moderated by Dr. Nadine White, Director of Human Resources, are available below: Vice-Chancellor Schmidt called the vote a “very close result” that reflects “valid arguments on both sides.” Schmidt says he is committed to amending the enterprise agreement and that if the Fair Work Commission approves it, the wage stoppage “will directly translate into the possibility for the ANU to “maintain more jobs.” Schmidt also acknowledged that the variant would not solve “all the problems” of the university and assured that the costs of the ANU still needed to be reduced in the future. When voting, you must indicate whether or not you support the proposed amendment. To allow staff time to review this proposed amendment, a seven-day access period will begin on Wednesday, June 10, 2020, in accordance with the Fair Work Act 2009. The amendment would delay planned wage increases in the 2020 and 2021 Enterprise Agreement as follows: the university announced that it had proposed an amendment to the Australian National University Enterprise Agreement 2017-2021. This agreement applies to all university staff, with the exception of staff employed under paragraph 11.1 and employees of the 2010 Live Performance Award. Staff members voted to extend staff pay increases planned for July 2020 and 2021 by one year.
